City of Turku Recreational Islands
WHEN IN TURKU, YOU’RE AT THE EDGE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ARCHIPELAGO IN THE WORLD. THE ISLANDS OF VEPSÄ, MAISAARI AND PÄHKINÄINEN OFFER MORE THAN A DAY’S WORTH OF ARCHIPELAGO ADVENTURE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.
Nearby Turku, there are many ways to get around and spend your holiday. One of the most popular ways is to head out to the city’s nearby recreational islands, where you can easily spend a day or more during your summer vacation.
Rising from the heart of the Airisto, Vepsä is the largest of the islands and also offers the most in the way of activities and accommodation. Activities include frisbee golf, miniature golf, volleyball, soccer and whatever else an active mind can find. In addition, the island has a sandy and gently sloping beach.
Maisaari and Pähkinäinen are a bit farther out into the archipelago and thus offer a more peaceful destination for hiking. The islands are accessible by inter-island ferry from the dock in Haapala on Rymättylä. The ride is free but you must contact and order the ferry at least 24-hours in advance.
Every island has a café that opens daily, as well as some basic restaurant services. Various saunas are available for hire, with lean-to shelters and other campfire sites also freely available. All the islands are make great locations for social gatherings, such as with colleagues or friends.
